OFFER DESCRIPTION

- The development and use of reactive microreactors for accounting the geochemical effects of minerals dissolution / precipitation during the methanogenesis process, specifically through the hydrothermal synthesis of representative geominerals on a chip,
The development and use of microreactors for implementing the methanogenesis process in a continuous flow mode;
- The implementation of in situ characterization spectroscopy (Raman and FTIR) for metabolites mapping and for studying the reaction products in real time according to different parameters (screening)
- The realization and the improvement of experiments and the exploitation of the results;
- The participation to papers and patents writing;
- The participation to the organization of workshops and meetings in the frame of the project;
- The analysis of experimental risks and the development of safety procedure to fit with standards.

The ERC BIG MAC project (2017-2022) aims at studying the bioconversion of CO2 in geological environments through methanogenesis reactions. It gathers competences in chemical engineering, biological engineering and microbiology in anaerobic conditions, with the objectives to investigate CO2 subsurface biorecycling. Preliminary results have demonstrated the feasibility of this strategy by combining small scale experimental tools (micro- and millifluidics reactors). One of the remaining objective of the project concerns the development and use of reactive biological labs on a chip mimicking deep underground environment (pressure, temperature, porosity, minerals reactivity) to carry out the methanogenesis reaction. Therefore, the proposed postdoc position will aim at developing and using transparent high pressure microreactors (p < 400 bar, T < 100°C) reproducing the minerals reactivity of deep underground rocks for: (i) synthesizing geominerals in situ, (ii) studying the generation of hydrogen multiphase CO2 / brine media, (iii) accessing qualitative information on methanogen strains biofilm development (through in situ image analysis) and location inside a model porous medium, (iv) evaluate the impact of the biomass growth on the properties of the porous medium characteristics and on the injectivity.

Founded in 1995, the lnstitute for Condensed Matter Chemistry of Bordeaux activities include both fundamental and applied research and focus on 3 domains : Solid State Chemistry, Materials Science and Molecular Science. ICMCB has extensive expertise in design, synthesis, shaping and characterisation of materials, with the goal to explore and optimise their functionalities. This wide scope and a large, complementary spectrum of methods available, generate fruitful synergies among our faculty (researchers, engineers and technical staff) - contributing to the outstanding reputation of the ICMCB.

Eligibility criteria

The candidate must hold a PhD degree in chemical engineering and materials with expertise in microfluidics. He/she should demonstrate high independence in his/her/its work, high motivation for the project and a strong team spirit. He/she will have to show great curiosity and a good sense of organization to develop, understand, study and optimize the synthesis of geominerals in high pressure microfluidics reactors late rused for the bioconversion of CO2 to methane through methanogenesis. The candidate will have to demonstrate high level of organization to work with PhD students, postdocs, project PI and the external collaborators.
