Academic staff member (PhD Candidate)
Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) is one of the largest universities in Germany. The research foci of the research section “Political Anthropology” lie at the intersection of Political and Feminist Anthropology as well as Indian Ocean and Swahili-Studies. The regional focus includes Eastern Africa, the Arabian Peninsula and the global Swahili-speaking diaspora. Your tasks:
- independent development and implementation of a research project (with the aim of a doctorate)
- further scientific qualification (i.e. PhD)
- teaching commitments (2 semester hours per week, basic courses)
- support to the representative of the section in the preparation of a grant application
- participation in examinations and the university’s committee work
- general support of the section “Political Anthropology"

In addition to the general requirements according to public services law, applicants must meet the recruitment requirements stipulated in § 57 of the Hochschulgesetz of Rhineland-Palatinate.
- a successfully completed scientific university degree (BA and MA), preferably in Social Anthropology/ Ethnology
- very good knowledge of ethnographic and empirical methods
- experience in teaching in higher education is an advantage
- experience in presenting and publishing research results
- very good knowledge of German and English
- Swahili language skills/ regional knowledge of Eastern Africa desired
